FIRE MARK
Conemaugh Valley Mutual Insurance Company was establish in 1877 at Johnstown, Pennsylvania. It is a privately held company which is incorporated in the state of Pennsylvania. Conemaugh Valley Mutual is now part of the Allegany Insurance Group.
This mark is of cast metal construction and measure approximately 8.25" X 10.5". It is the silhouette of a Native American Indian Chief in full headdress. The Fire Mark was cast by John Wright. Paint is good and there is a nice vintage look and feel to the mark. This is a very nice item and one which is not regularly seen for sale. It would make an excellent addition for any collector of firefighting or insurance memorabilia.
American insurance company's fire marks were placed on the exterior of a house and were intended to discourage malicious arson by showing that the owner would not greatly suffer if the building were destroyed. Additionally, the mark stood as a guarantee to fire brigades that the insurance company which insured the house in question would reward handsomely the brigade extinguishing a blaze on the premises.
