LUMBERMEN'S INSURANCE COMPANY
The Lumbermen’s Insurance Company of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, began operations in 1873 when paid fire departments were first beginning to function.
Their original fire mark was of cast iron construction and consisted of an overlapping monogram of the company’s initials, “LICo” embossed upon a 9.0" X 9.0" iron square. The mark was framed with four logs that overlap at the corners.
This is an authentic original Lumbermen's Fire Mark which is documented in Footprints of Assurance (authoritative source for fire marks), as BU 442. The mark measures approximately 9.25" X 9.25" (over 11.25" X 11.25" including log tips) and is of cast iron (over 3 lb ) construction. This mark has a rough rustic surface with several layers of paint, the top layer being white house paint. It is circa 1873, is structurally sound and is in good condition for its age.
This is a very nice item and it would make an excellent addition for fire mark, fire fighting or insurance memorabilia collectors
American insurance company's fire marks were placed on the exterior of a house and were intended to discourage malicious arson by showing that the owner would not greatly suffer if the building were destroyed. Additionally, the mark stood as a guarantee to fire brigades that the insurance company which insured the house in question would reward handsomely the brigade extinguishing a blaze on the premises.
