Fireman's Fund Insurance Company of San Francisco
Fireman's Fund was originally founded in 1863 and was named for an arrangement in which they paid 10 percent of their profits to widows and orphans of firefighters. Their
origins trace back to the numerous expensive and disastrous city fires in 1849 and the 1850’s. Their history is much tied-into the history of
San Francisco
from the early pioneer Gold Rush days to now being one of the largest insurance carriers in the world.
Their fire mark depicts an old time Fire Plug/Hydrant and Hose along with the Company's Name.
This cast metal mark measures approximately 7.75"x 4.875", has a black painted front surface, with a red hydrant and gold lettering. Great looking fire mark in excellent condition only very minor paint nicks/chips.
This is an authentic Fireman's Fund fire mark which is listed in the Addendums to "Footprint of Assurance" (the Authoritative Source for Fire Marks) as BU #338-X-2. The mark itself is circa the early second half of the 1900's
This is a nice hard to find piece and would make a great addition to any firemark, firefighting or insurance memorabilia collection. This is a must for a Fireman's Fund employee, retiree, agent-broker, or insurance memorabilia collector.
American insurance company’s fire marks were placed on the exterior of a house and were intended to discourage malicious arson by showing that the owner would not suffer greatly if the building was destroyed. Additionally, the mark stood as a guarantee to fire brigades that the insurance company which insured the house in question would reward handsomely the brigade extinguishing a blaze on the premises.
